Dr. Armando Briceño has been practicing Pediatrics for 33 years and is currently working in the private sector. When he graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Mexico, the specialty of neonatology was not so broad, so it continues to occupy a good part of his time. In his clinic, he sees a wide range of seasonal diseases, like respiratory and gastrointestinal ones, along with diseases specific to the tropical climate in Mérida (Yucatán), where he lives. Regarding the simulator, he appreciates the possibility to think and experience virtual cases that are close to real ones.
Madrid, October 10, 2018. "Here, we’ve had patients with Kawasaki disease (...); Kawasaki is a puzzle," the pediatrician Armando Briceño opens his interview with Practicum Script. He makes this statement based on concrete examples that can be understood as bridging cases between the contents of the simulator and his care practice. "Script – the specialist says in the video – places you on a stage that can be anywhere in the world, in an emergency room or a doctor's office, and presents the patient the way he may arrive to us." It does so with a time limit, which "gets you closer to the real medicine."
According to his understanding of medical science, "what the eyes do not see, the mind does not know." The value of this simulation tool lies precisely in the fact that "it transports you virtually to a clinical scenario and challenges you to solve it by reflecting on each step." There are several means to become up to date, and the comparative advantage of this specific one, in his opinion, is that although meetings allow you to learn from the experience of others and articles make you up to date with the latest scientific advances, "Practicum Script designs a space dedicated to reasoning, decision, and acting," he shared by email. As an instrument of continuing professional development, "The way Practicum tells you ‘this approach didn’t work, what would you do' is challenging."
What Practicum Script proposes "is a method to reach a diagnosis." In this sense, "I see a case of (Practicum) Script as a walk, a journey that reminds and expands you, and makes you move forward. The system offered is ideal to put the mind to work in different areas, especially because "we are not in the age of the clinical eye anymore.” Medicine relies equally on evidence and thinking skills. "The clinical eye, I feel, is the sum of knowledge, experience, success, and mistakes that a professional has had," says Dr. Briceño. Moreover, "I have always said: when the intern finishes his residency, his knowledge is fresh, but his foundation is only going to be built by years of practice."
