Dr. Zambrano is a 59-year-old Ecuadorian pediatrician. She graduated in medicine from the State University of Guayaquil, Ecuador, and currently works in primary care at the Ministry of Public Health and in private practice. Dr. Zambrano emphasizes that the Practicum Script cases of infectious diseases have been especially relevant for her health care practice, because she faces daily situations in which poverty prevails in the population, with poor health care conditions and patients with deficient nutritional status, which are aggravating factors to any disease. Moreover, the program allows her to study without pressure.
Madrid, August 5, 2019. What motivated you to do Pediatrics?
I have always been interested in Pediatrics, even at the beginning of my undergraduate studies. On the other hand, as a primary care professional, everything we can detect in a timely manner in terms of cardiovascular pathology is a priority to avoid [patients’] decompensation or delays in establishing accurate diagnoses. This allows us to deliver treatment to prevent complications and sequelae that may delay the patient’s growth and development.
What is the value of a virtual athenaeum like Practicum Script for you?
From the first moment, I participated enthusiastically in each case. The proposal is very interesting because it makes us faster and more precise in [raising] possible diagnoses and [choosing] complementary tests, especially when we face economic constraints forcing us to be more effective and efficient and, finally, choose the right treatment. We improve our skills.
Do you think Practicum Script helps you think beyond the prepackaged solutions of the guidelines?
It definitely does, because each patient is a different case, even when having the same pathologies and under the same conditions. We must focus individually and have a broad perspective on all aspects.
Do you consider it necessary to be wrong (without consequences) in order to optimize clinical reasoning?
In daily practice, patients may arrive in different conditions, hence the importance of being very agile in our approach, so we can make the best decision.
Did you find any cases especially relevant to you during the course?
Yes, especially in infectious diseases, which I see daily because I work in an environment where poverty prevails in the population, with the little patients having poor health conditions and nutritional status, which are aggravating factors in any pathology.
You gained access to the course with a grantship. Why is it important to invest in these online training solutions?
I received the scholarship from Sandoz Laboratories. I think these online solutions are the best approach: we have the time to analyze each case without pressure or need to travel to another place. I have recommended the course to several colleagues.
