The Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) celebrated this year’s conference under the theme “Digital Transformation for Healthcare Professions: Patient Care, Education and Research”, which highlighted the role of digital technologies in current medical education and the Georgian David Tvildiani Medical University (DTMU) intervened with a presentation about their students’ satisfaction with Practicum Script at the clinical cycle. According to DTMU, 93% of students consider Practicum Script as a valuable clinical reasoning tool. DTMU concludes this figure correlates with an active involvement of the students in the learning process.
Madrid - October 30, 2023. The AMSE Conference 2023, held in Iasi (Romania) between the 5th and the 7th pf October, provided a platform for medical schools to share their experiences and practices in harnessing digital technologies for undergraduate education and representatives from DTMU took the chance to showcase their students' reliance on the Practicum Script clinical reasoning programme to become better practitioners. An online survey conducted among 108 medical students who used Practicum Script in the 5th year of the Internal Medicine Course (with 10 formative cases and 10 exam cases) showed a high level of satisfaction with the programme, including assistance aby teachers and peers.
The report, presented on the afternoon of Friday the 6th, shows that students’ self-perception of their progress in the context of field specific skills is high: while prioritizing differential diagnosis, students based them on probabilistic (95%), prognostic (79%) and pragmatic approaches (59%). Most of the respondents mentioned their use of a possibility approach (93%) and declared that Practicum Script helped them progress in transferable skills. For more than 75%, Practicum Script was easy to use. Also, the clinical simulation model was seen as close to real-life clinical reasoning by 78% of students, a good method for self-directed learning by 79%, and useful to their future medical practice by 63%.
Subjective measurements showed that Practicum Script tasks require high cognitive load, but not due to high extraneous working memory resources.
The signatories of DTMU’s abstract, professors Aleksandra Nadiradze, Nino Gakhokidze, Ketevan Kapanadze, Liza Goderdzishvili, Patata Tsagareishvili, Tamar Talakvadze and Nino Tabagari, hope that their work may inspire new ideas. For them, “it is well known that satisfaction with any type of learning, can influence not only students’ motivation but also the acceptance of learning formats and the achievement of academic outcomes”.
A rapidly changing landscape
According to AMSE General Assembly, there’s a need for medical schools to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape in modern healthcare. In a brief welcoming communication, its president, Prof Harms Peters, exposed that “the event promotes the highest standards of medical education and research, fostering collaboration and innovation among medical schools across Europe, and addressing emerging issues and challenges facing medical education and research in the digital age.”
To date, the DTMU has been using Practicum Script for four years and they will soon start working on a new research protocol on the impact of virtual patient simulation's education in alliance with the Practicum Foundation.
